Providing End-to-End Statistical Delay Guarantees with Earliest Deadline First Scheduling and Per-Hop Traffic Shaping

چکیده
This paper develops a framework for statistically guaranteeing end-to-end delay bounds to leaky-bucket-constrained flows transporting real-time traffic in a network of switches using Earliest Deadline First (EDF) packet scheduling and per-hop traffic shaping. We first analyze the delay-bound violation probabilities at an isolated EDF scheduler fed by fluid source processes generating extremal dual-leaky-bucket-regulated traffic. We compute a close upper bound by applying the Beneš approach to an equivalent hypothetical system derived from the real one. We then extend the analysis to the end-to-end scenario in presence of traffic reshaping at each node in the network. We compare the analytical results with simulations, and show that the match is very close. We also investigate the advantages of smoothing the traffic at the ingress to the network, and propose a simple choice of smoothing parameters, which performs very well. Using realistic traffic parameters, we compare the schedulable region of our statistical framework with that of the corresponding deterministic framework, and demonstrate that the statistical framework allows tremendous improvements in network utilization, even for very low delay-violation probabilities. The framework developed in this paper is therefore highly useful in practical packet networks to provide quality of service to real-time applications in the form of statistical, rather than deterministic, end-to-end delay bounds. Keywords— Scheduling, Earliest Deadline First, Statistical Delay Bounds, Schedulable Region.

End-to-End Statistical Delay Guarantees using Earliest Deadline First (EDF) Packet Scheduling
This paper develops a framework for statistically guaranteeing end-to-end delay bounds to envelopeconstrained connections transporting real-time traffic in a network of switches employing the Earliest Deadline First (EDF) packet scheduling scheme in conjunction with per-hop traffic shaping. The performance of an isolated EDF scheduler fed by markovian sources has been studied earlier in the lit...

Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of end-to-end delay guarantees to real-time applications is an important issue in emerging broadband packet networks. Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling, in conjunction with per-hop traffic shaping (jointly called Rate Controlled EDF or RC-EDF) has been recognised as an effective means of end-to-end deterministic delay provisioning. This paper addresses t...

Abstract— The provision of Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of end-to-end delay guarantees to real-time applications is an important issue in emerging broadband packet networks. Of the various packet scheduling schemes that have been proposed in the literature, Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling in conjunction with per-hop traffic shaping (jointly referred to as Rate-Controlled EDF or RC...
متن کاملAchieving End-to-end Delay Bounds by EDF Scheduling without Traffic Shaping
Earliest Deadline First scheduling with per-node traffic shaping (RC-EDF) has the largest schedulable region among all practical policies known today and has been considered a good solution for providing end-to-end packet delay bounds. In order to harness the traffic burstiness inside a network to satisfy the schedulability condition of EDF, pernode traffic shaping has been believed to be neces...

This paper proposes an analytical method to evaluate the delay violation probability of traffic flows with statistical Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees in an Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduler. The statistical QoS targets for each service class are expressed in terms of a delay threshold and delay violation probability. We study both cases isolated nodes and end-to-end paths comprisin...
